Mental Health and Learning: Why Emotional Wellbeing Matters in the Classroom

When we talk about improving education, we often focus on infrastructure, technology, teaching methods, and academic achievement. But one of the most crucial factors for a student’s success is often invisible: their mental health and emotional wellbeing.

A child’s ability to learn, engage, and thrive in school is deeply connected to how safe, supported, and emotionally healthy they feel. In underserved communities—like many in Northeast Brazil—this connection becomes even more important, as students often face significant stress and adversity outside the classroom.

At G&N Foundation, we believe that for education to be truly transformative, it must address the whole child—not just their mind, but also their heart.

The Link Between Mental Health and Academic Success

Research consistently shows that students with good emotional wellbeing:

  • Attend school more regularly

  • Show greater motivation to learn

  • Perform better academically

  • Develop stronger social skills

  • Are more resilient in the face of challenges

On the other hand, students dealing with untreated anxiety, depression, trauma, or chronic stress often struggle with concentration, memory, and behavior—factors that directly affect their learning.

The Challenges Faced by Students in Vulnerable Communities

For many students in low-income areas of Northeast Brazil, the realities of daily life create additional barriers to emotional health:

  • Poverty and food insecurity

  • Family instability or violence

  • Lack of safe public spaces

  • Exposure to community violence

  • Social exclusion and discrimination

These stressors often show up in the classroom as withdrawal, aggression, disengagement, or poor academic performance—not because the students lack ability, but because they are carrying burdens that no child should have to face alone.

Creating Emotionally Supportive Classrooms

Schools can—and must—play a powerful role in supporting students’ mental health. An emotionally supportive classroom:

  • Fosters trust and safety between students and teachers

  • Encourages positive relationships with peers

  • Builds routines and structure that promote a sense of stability

  • Incorporates social and emotional learning (SEL) alongside academic content

  • Offers access to mental health resources and referrals when needed

In short, when schools nurture students’ emotional wellbeing, they create the foundation for deeper learning and lifelong growth.

How G&N Foundation Supports Emotional Wellbeing in Schools

At G&N Foundation, we recognize that learning environments must care for the whole child. Our efforts include:

  • Supporting school infrastructure projects that create safe, welcoming spaces

  • Encouraging teacher training in social and emotional learning strategies

  • Promoting student-centered approaches that value each child’s voice and experience

  • Building community partnerships to increase access to mental health services where needed

Because when students feel safe, valued, and supported, they are far more likely to stay in school—and far more likely to thrive.

A Call for Holistic Education

If we want to close educational gaps and build a more just society, we must move beyond academics alone. Emotional wellbeing is not a “bonus” — it is an essential ingredient for meaningful learning.

Let’s work together to create classrooms where every student can feel safe, supported, and ready to learn—not just for today, but for life.
