The Link Between Learning Environments and Student Success

When we think about what makes a student succeed, we often point to motivation, access to books, or quality teaching. While all of these matter, one crucial factor is often overlooked: the physical environment in which a student learns.

For students in underserved communities—especially in the suburbs of Northeast Brazil—school infrastructure is not just a backdrop. It’s a daily influence on focus, performance, and emotional wellbeing.

Students with backpacks gather outside a glass-fronted building. Some chat animatedly, others walk or check phones. Casual, sunny setting.

Why Learning Environments Matter

A growing body of research shows that the condition of school buildings has a measurable impact on academic achievement. Students are more likely to attend, engage, and perform well in schools that are clean, safe, and conducive to learning.

Poor environments, on the other hand, contribute to:

  • Lower test scores

  • Higher dropout rates

  • Chronic absenteeism

  • Stress, anxiety, and lack of focus

It's hard to concentrate on a math lesson when there’s no fan in a 38°C classroom, the walls are crumbling, or desks are broken. These are not just inconveniences, they are barriers to learning.

Key Elements of an Effective Learning Environment

1. Safety and Structure: Students need to feel physically safe before they can mentally engage. This includes secure classrooms, proper lighting, and clean facilities.

2. Air, Light, and Temperature: Natural light, proper ventilation, and comfortable temperatures aren’t luxuries—they directly impact cognitive function and focus.

3. Equipment and Materials: Basic tools like desks, chairs, chalkboards, and books help create structure and dignity in a student’s learning journey.

4. A Sense of Belonging: When a school is cared for, students feel cared for. A clean, bright, and welcoming environment signals that their education matters.

The Reality in Underserved Schools

In many public schools across Northeast Brazil, children study in overcrowded classrooms with peeling paint, poor ventilation, and no access to technology. Teachers do their best, but the physical space works against them.

This environment communicates a message: “Your education isn’t a priority.”

At G&N Foundation, we believe the opposite. We believe every student deserves to learn in a space that supports—not undermines—their growth.

Our Commitment

Through targeted funding and partnerships, we work to:

  • Support renovations in schools serving low-income communities

  • Provide basic classroom infrastructure and supplies

  • Ensure students have spaces that are safe, clean, and inspiring

We know that fixing a wall, repairing a roof, or replacing broken furniture won’t solve every educational challenge. But it sends a powerful message of hope, dignity, and possibility.

A Better Future Starts With the Basics

You can’t build a future on a cracked foundation. That’s why creating strong learning environments is one of our core pillars.

By improving school infrastructure, we’re not just repairing buildings—we’re rebuilding futures.
